What are you doing? : Haymaker

What’s up Champions?! BananaCrapshoot here yet again with another Marvel Champions article. Now today I wanted to talk about some situational Champions play and a look at, in a given situation or deckbuild Is a card worth playing? There’s lots of variables to consider and I think this will be a good exercise to go through. I hope you all can agree.

Starting off with some deckbuilding let’s talk about Haymaker. Haymaker is a 2 cost basic event that deals 3 damage to an enemy. Now generally 1:1 card to damage ratio is inefficient when you look at cards like Relentless assault which is 1.7:1 damage to card ratio, with the caveat of targeting a minion and gains overkill if you paid with a physical resource. Uppercut is another one to look at which costs 3 and deals 5 damage and works out to 1.25:1 damage to card ratio.

Now how the ratio breaks down isn’t looking at the resource cost of the card but the card itself. Assuming every card is worth one resource to play a 3 cost uppercut that actually costs 4 cards, the 3 to play it and the card itself.

Now back to Haymaker, we can see it’s less efficient than Uppercut or Relentless assault, so why would I ever want to include it in my deck or play it?

A few reasons are, 1. Your hero kit struggles to handle minion swarm. 2. You are playing an aspect and/or hero without lots of damage dealing cards.

  1. Hero Kit Struggles Minion Swarm:

Encounters like Mutagen Formula, Zola, Crossbones, Ultron and even Klaw can flood the board with minions. Not every hero is equipped to handle the amount of enemies you’ll be facing down. Some people play leadership for the cheap allies, or aggression for Relentless Assault. But there’s another cheap option and it’s Haymaker. Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, and others lack a way to deal damage to multiple enemies at a time. A decent enough solution is throwing in a couple haymakers. It gives you a cheap option to deal with those pesky 2/3 health minions.

  1. You are playing an aspect or Hero that doesn’t do lots of damage.

Let’s be honest unless you are playing Aggression or Leadership, your aspect isn’t helping you deal damage a whole lot. Solution, Haymaker. Some heroes don’t have lots of damage cards, solution haymaker. Ms Marvel is a good example, she has her one attack event but other than that, she needs some help, and if you are playing protection or justice and want to help deal 5 damage off an embiggen, what’s your solution? Haymaker.

Now I’m not advocating that Haymaker be regarded as a great or even a good card. I showed it’s comparatively inefficient to other damage dealing events. But sometimes, haymaker can be the best card to play that turn. In THAT moment. Another nugget of info is that there are 27 minions with 3 or less HP. Perfect haymaker targets! That’s critical to know 😉

Hope everyone enjoyed me rambling about justifications to playing a less than good card. Please check out the rest of our articles and stay scheming champions.
