What is happening Champions?! BananaCrapshoot here today for another article from The Side Scheme, this time I want to talk about some exciting new game modes and a challenge put out to the community courtesy of Fantasy Flight Games.
Now if you are unaware FFG put out an article and RRG update this week. In it they specifically talk about two new game modes for the game. That’s right not one, but two new additional ways to enjoy our favorite super hero card game. The two modes are Rookie, and Heroic. I will link the FFG article and RRG at the end of my snooze fest here.
The first game mode introduced is rookie mode and it’s entry in the RRG reads:
This is definitely aimed for the even more casual than casual crowd, the super casual. The brand new player or the young player. I have three young kids at home and the idea of using rookie mode to teach them the game without them losing their gnat like attention span is really appealing. This is a great intro game mode. Also nice for players without a lot of time or are having trouble with some of the harder scenarios. This game is already geared towards a casual player base so making it even more accessible is great in the long run I think.
Now for you hardcore Champions that like punishing yourselves and failing non stop until you get that 1 in 14 million shot of winning, Heroic is for you, it’s RRG entry reads:
So if Expert Mutagen Formula and 3 encounter cards round 1 wasnt hard enough for you, you can make the game as challenging as you want for yourself. They explain it well enough in the entry I’m not gonna spell out how it works again. This is super exciting. This takes stuff like Rhino, Wrecking Crew, and the Risky Business scenario to another level of difficulty. Risky Business is a very fun scenario but is seen as one of the weakest ones, now put that puppy up a few notches and deal yourself an additional 1 or 2 encounter cards each round and see how that goes. The community I think loves the variety and difficulty heroic adds to the game.
Now the last thing I want to talk about is “The Challenge.” Towards the end of the FFG article they offer up an achievement to shoot for. The scenario offered up was Klaw Heroic 3 with the Doomsday Chair modular set. I accepted this challenge and proceeded to stream the game later that night on The Side Scheme’s twitch channel. I did a two handed set up using Captain America Leadership and Thor Aggression. My thought was to use Hammer Throws to one shot MODOK when he showed up, and Allies to handle threat. Well that didn’t really go as plan and I got steam rolled. This challenge is no joke and I’m looking forward to attempting it again. That video is now on YouTube, so if you want to see me get pummeled that’s there for you to enjoy.
Well that’s it for this one, just wanted to share some brief thoughts I had on the new ways to play. Like I said the links for the FFG article, new RRG, and the video of me getting curb stomped will be below.
