The Hero’s Journey Part 7: Ms Marvel

What’s up Champions?! It is I, BananaCrapshoot back yet again for a Hero’s Journey article. Today we will be looking at Ms Marvel. Just as a reminder, in this series I take a look at the cards that make up the signature hero deck, without considering the Identity card itself.

Starting off, as usual with the signature ally, Red Dagger is very interesting design wise. That 2 resource for 2 damage isn’t great value but returning him to your hand can set up some good plays. Ms Marvel tends to cycle her deck faster than other heroes so his ability to go back to your hand helps you not cycle quite as much. His stats are right in line with what you’d expect. He’s overall a very solid ally.

Normally I’d go in number order for the cards but Ms Marvel has a very unique design and because of that I wanted to look at 2 cards before moving on. First up is Embiggen. This is obviously a damage buff card. It’s super unique and thematic and I love it. Get this out early and it pays for itself on the second turn you use it.

The other card I wanted to look at right away is Shrink. Another thematic and unique card, but this one buffs your thwart events. This does bring more value overall than Embiggen as Thwarting is slightly more valuable. This almost pays for itself on the first use.

This is a straightforward attack event. Nothing fancy just 4 dmg for 2 resources. However when you Embiggen this piece it’s 6 dmg which is where things get exciting.

And here’s the thwarting version of Big Hands. Same idea nothing fancy or special just decent value, then you Shrink and BAM, KA-POW value city and all the thwart is off the main scheme because you just thwarted for 5 homie.

Besides Backflip and Shield Block this is probably my favorite defense event in the game. Why? Well it prevents 3 dmg but you get to draw a card. As we all know by now hand advantage is king in this game. So any card you play during the villain phase that can replace itself automatically gets a gold star in my book.

This is a solid card for Kamala, helps you cycle your deck and also adds a card to it so you don’t empty as often.

Bruno is awesome, he helps you do something with that card you want 2 rounds later, or just a card you can’t use that round, then you get to pull up to 3 of the cards you stashed to your hand, setting up huge turns. Love Bruno.

Any card that effectively increases your hand size is good, this card does that by being the alter ego helicarrier. I just wish it wasn’t an Alter-Ego Action. You can’t use this on any of your good events, have to use it on other board state cards. Like Shrink, Embiggen, and the other supports/upgrades. This card is ok but I wish it was just an Action to use.

Ok so maybe this is why Nakia is Alter-Ego action, because this slick suit generates the best resource in the game with the stipulation that it’s only used on events. Not a problem, confuse, tackle, relentless assault. All have resource kickers for secondary effects line stun, confuse, and overkill so this pops all of those for you.

Overall Ms Marvel’s 15 hero card deck is ok, it’s not the best we have seen but I don’t think it’s the worst either. Her cards are very thematic to her but without embiggen or shrink in play you are going to have a rough time.

Scores:

Tommy of Titan - 3.7

BananaCrapshoot- 3.4

My co-host and I have similar thoughts it would seem. She plays well with all the aspects and is a ton of fun to play but she’s definitely not overpowered or pushing the envelope at all. Just a reminder on our scale, it goes from 1-5, 1 being unplayable, 5 being super strong.
