What’s up champions?! I wanted to bring a different flare for the high fives article series and today we are going off topic with me giving my ranking of the 5 best MMO’s you can play right now in October 2021. Let’s dive right in, first with some honorable mentions.
Honorable Mentions:
New World
This one is less than a month old, and honestly I never thought it would release, it was delayed more times than my MTS order. But it’s out and it’s here and it’s pretty exciting. You can “carve your own destiny” but I need more time with the game before I can throw it into my top 5 MMOs.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
This one is close to my heart, I played this game pretty hard at its launch. It has a pretty satisfying gameplay loop. Each class has its own main story and there are decision trees for your character that do matter. And it feels like KOTOR online, they really nail the feel. It is free to play which is good and bad, you have lots of content available as a free player (base game) then buy expansions, there is a terrible micro transaction in game store though that if you ignore, I salute you. The newer content drops are really interesting story wise and add some cool mechanics. Overall if you dig KOTOR giving this free to play game a shot is more than worth your time.
5. World of Warcraft:
You can’t have any mmo list without this one on it, this kicked off the genre and pioneered what gaming would looks like from its release onward. Every game even single player action games take some kind of rpg elements with a not at world of Warcraft for really mainlining the stuff. It’s been regularly updated and still has lots of content to offer players, new and veteran alike.
4. Elite Dangerous:
If you are into space and want a good space mmo this is the one for you. You can do literally anything in this game, mine, pirate, bounty Hunt, bus passengers, fight Aliens, explore, and any other space faring thing I forgot. A cool feature is the game space is a 1:1 of the Milky Way galaxy so you can fly to earth or Lots of other cool things outside of our solar system. This one also has been updated regularly and is worth the look.
3. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn:
After a disastrous launch the game of FFXIV was removed, revamped and Reborn and man, did they get it right. This has been a great mmo since I think around 2012. Has had regular updates and expansions. It has a great soundtrack and the stories presented are intriguing. A more traditional MMO with some FF flare. If you are into FF and looking for an online Fix, this is the game for you.
2. Neverwinter:
Do you like D&D? Do you like playing action adventure games? Do you like playing with your friends? Then don’t play dark alliance, neverwinter is the game you are looking for. Another one that’s been out for a few years but with steady numbers, and lots of updates. Neverwinter is a free to play game with the in game store for cosmetic and quality of life purchases. One thing I enjoy about neverwinter is lots of the gameplay expansions are bigger tabletop D&D names campaigns. You also get to interact and occasionally team up with characters from novels, games, and campaigns like the companions of the hall and Elminster. I will say sometimes I have some rubberbanding in highly populated zones even with good stable internet. So if you are into the world and lore of D&D. Give neverwinter a look.
1. The Elder Scrolls Online:
Here it is, my top MMO to get into in 2021. This game man, it has a lot going for it. I’ll list a few here, soundtrack is good, almost all the dialog is voice acted, 4-5 content drops a year, fun gameplay, etc. The team at zenimax online is killing it with ESO. You can do whatever you want in any order. Seriously, you can choose when to do the main quest, you really never would have too except you would deprive yourself of skill points. But right now if you start a new character you do a short tutorial then you pick where you go to start, each zone or region has its own zone story on top of the base game main quest, then there’s side missions, etc. so how does this work with scaling? Well the game is scaled for level 50, and if you are under level 50 it gives the player a buff to be able to hang with the world. It has all the freedom you’d expect from an elder scrolls game, even the classes aren’t locked into roles, any class can be a tank, dps, or healer. One major plus for me is there aren’t many fetch quests, and lots of times with conversational passive skills you can easily unlock, you can bypass the fetching part. There’s just so much going for ESO it has to be number 1 for me.
Thats it for this one. Thanks for stopping by and stay scheming champions.
